[유래]

17세기 해상 전투에서는 항복의 표시로 깃발을 내렸다. 또한 그 시기 해전의 관습은 대포로 상대 함선의 돛대를 겨냥하여 무력화시키는 것이었다. 이는 돛대가 모두 부서지면 그 함선의 선장은 항복하는 것 이외에 할 수 있는 것이 없었기 때문이다. 그럼에도 선장이 포기하지 않고 싸우기로 결정한다면 배의 남아있는 삭구(rigging)에 깃발을 게양하여 그 뜻을 표시했다. 이를 'nail one's colors to the mast'라고 한다. 

1797년 프랑스 독립 전쟁의 일부로, 잉글랜드와 네덜란드 사이에 일어난 캠퍼다운 전투(Battle of Camperdown)에서 활약한 Venerable 함선의 선원들을 기리기 위해 이 표현이 만들어졌다는 것이 유래로서 동의되고 있다. 

이 전투에서 Adam Duncan 제독이 이끄는 기함인 Venerable이 선봉을 맡았는데 잉글랜드에게 있어 이 전투는 시작부터 잘 풀리지 않았다. Venerable의 돛대가 상대 공격에 명중되어 파란 깃발이 내려졌는데, 이는 Duncan 제독이 전투에 항복했다는 의미로 받아들여질 수 있었다. 

그때에 선원 Jack Crawford가 남아있는 돛대에 깃발을 들고 올라가 뒤따르고 있는 함선에 깃발이 보이게끔 그 깃발을 고정시켰다. 전투는 결국 잉글랜드가 승리를 거두었고 Jack Crawford의 행동은 전투에 있어서 매우 결정적인 행동으로 인정되었다. 몇몇 역사학자들은 이 전투가 네덜란드의 해상 패권의 종말과 'Britannia ruled the waves'라 불리는 영국의 해상 패권의 시작점이라 믿는다. 이 전투 후 Jack Crawford 선원은 그의 고향 선덜랜드로 돌아가 영웅 대접을 받았다고 한다. 

또 이 충직한 선원들의 명성은 국민들에게 널리 알려지게 되었고, 1801년 1월에는 극작가 Richard Sherida의 다음과 같은 하원 연설이 Edinburgh Advertiser에 실렸다: 

"I have no hesitation in saying that the Maritime Law is the charter of our existence, the banner under which we all should rally; it is the flag which, imitating the example of our gallant seamen, we should nail to the mast of the nation, and go down with the vessel rather than strike it!"

'nail one's colors to the mast'가 처음 쓰인 기록은1807년 8월 자 영국 신문인 The Hereford Journal에서 발견할 수 있었다. 이 신문은 영국과 미국의  해상 교전에 대해 쓰여있는데 미국의 함장이 제대로 싸우지도 않고 항복했다는 내용이 기록되어 있다: 

"You [Commodore James Barron] ought to have nailed your colours to the mast, and have fought whilst a timber remained on your ship."
