[유래]

확실한 유래는 없으나 몇가지 추측이 있다.

추측 1. 

장교들이 불명예 퇴직을 할 때 그들의 연대에서 'drum out(추방을 당하다)' 당하는 것에서 유래.

추측 2.

배우가 무대 위에 섰을 때 오케스트라 석을 마주 보게 되는 것에서 유래.

추측 3. 

영국 교회에서 귀족이나 상류층이 평범한 교구민들의 비판 섞인 향토적인 노래를 들어야 한다는 것에서 유래.
