[의미]

완전히 누군가의 통제 아래에 있다. 아무개의 손에서 놀다, 아무개가 하라는 대로 하다, 완전히 지배당해서, 자기 자신을 위한 결정이나 소원을 하는 힘 마저 잃다. 

[예문]

The negotiation is under the thumb of the mayor. 

그 협상은 시장의 손에 달렸다. 

The labor union is under the thumb of the firm 

그 노조는 완전히 회사의 손아귀에 있다. 

[유래] 

매가 날지 못하게 할 때 조련사가 엄지를 이용해 매를 그의 손에 잡아 놓는 것에서 유래한다는 설이 있지만 이는 사실이 아닙니다. 

'under one's thumb'은 다른 누군가에게 완벽히 통제당하고 있다는 것의 비유적 표현일 뿐입니다. 이는 강력한 가해자와 하찮은 피해자에 관한 비유인데 전자가 매우 강력하여 엄지손가락으로도 후자를 통제할 수 있다는 것을 뜻합니다. 

이 표현은 항상 왕이나 영주와 같은 권력자가 어떠한 문제나 사안에 대한 통제권을 행사하는 것을 가리킬 때 사용되었습니다. 이 표현과 관련하여 인쇄물 중에서 찾을 수 있는 가장 이른 기록은 18세기 영국 정치가인 Arthur Maynwaring(1668~1712)의 'The Life and Posthumous Works of Arthur Maynwaring(1715)'에서 찾을 수 있었습니다 (참고로 Posthumous work는 유작이라는 뜻을 갖고 있습니다):  

The French King having them under his Thumb, compell'd them to go at his Pace.

이 표현은 19세기까지 'thumbing'이라는 동사형을 만들어 낼 만큼 잘 확립되었고 1847년 James Halliwell's Dictionary of Archaic And Provincial Words (1847)에 다음과 같이 정의되었습니다: 

Thumbing: A Nottingham phrase, used to describe that species of intimidation practised by masters on their servants when the latter are compelled to vote as their employers please.

'Under the thumb'는 오늘날에도 18세기에 만들어졌을 때와 거의 같은 의미로 사용되고 있습니다.
